This week’s Gospel readings for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time comes from Mark 6:30-34 (and 53-56). The apostles are called away from their work by Jesus to find rest; this after returning from their successful missions abroad of going to out to teach. Yet, even as they try and seek refuge by way of boat, a crowd meets them at their destination. And how does Jesus treat this clamoring group upon their arrival? Is it with annoyance and dismissal because he’s in a hurry to take a break with the others? No. We see a loving and compassionate Jesus. He recognizes how in need of a teacher they are, like sheep without a shepherd, and so begins his calling. He responds to the needs of the people and he doesn’t hesitate to provide them with what they desire. In applying that to our lives, consider have there been moments that perhaps you retreated when you could have helped? One way we can show our Christ-like attitude and spirit is when we respond to the call of others, serving like he would have served. In a world so heavily focused on ourselves, let us not forget to imitate Christ and #livemysunday
