Sunday 7/25/2021

The Gospel reading for this week, the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, comes from John 6:1-15; additionally, 16-21. Verses 1 through 15 are richly interwoven with Old Testament sentiments and is a constant reminder how everything old is made new again. Like with Moses, Jesus tends to a hungry crowd and there is serious doubt whether there will be enough food for the thousands gathered (see Exodus 16). And yet, remarkably, Jesus makes this possible with a mere five loaves and two fish! It is not unlike the story in Exodus where God provides the Israelites with meat and bread. And so, Jesus continues to feed his people! Whereas with last week’s Gospel reading he feeds everyone with knowledge and teaching, this week he physically feeds them. He strongly links the past with the future as he breaks the bread, gives thanks, and supplies everlasting sustenance to those that follow him. He is the Messiah for who the people have waited and he reveals himself in ways they can understand. As Christians we celebrate that Jesus Christ came to us in the flesh to teach us this sacred lesson; he is the true bread of life! Remember this about your Savior each week as you #livemysunday
