Here we are in the Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time, or the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost, and the church lectionary is continuing to travel through the Gospel of Luke. This week’s reading is rather large, coming from Luke 12:32-48, and there is a lot to unpack. Instead of walking through it all, let’s focus on the first few verses. Jesus addresses his disciples here as his “little flock,” offering both a sense of comfort and belonging. He is reminding them what is theirs, should they prepare themselves a way; for the treasure that awaits them in the kingdom of God is grander than anything here on this earth with all their earthly possessions. The real treasure, “an inexhaustible treasure in heaven” (Luke 12:33) is what they gain after they give of themselves to others in glorifying the Lord. That same “inexhaustible treasure” can be ours too. When we #livemysunday in such a way that we give ourselves in service, sacrifice, and love to others we are experiencing the same attitudes of those early disciples. We too, can model our hearts after theirs, for they learned from Jesus himself.
