Today’s reading for the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time is a continuation on the bread of life discourse from Jesus. For the third week in a row, the reading is from the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel and today the verses are 41-51. What is John’s focus here and why is Jesus talking so much about this particular topic? Each week we unpack what this means a little more and in today’s verses we see that to be in a relationship with God means that we have been chosen by Him and drawn to him on purpose. To grow in that relationship, He ensures we have the instruction we need by having sent us his Son. Jesus teaches us that to come to the Father, we must believe in him and realize that he offers the way to eternal life. How? He gave his life up for us on the cross and to us in the bread so that when we believe and partake, we too, can receive eternal glory with our Father in Heaven.
