On the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time, the Gospel reading is taken from John 2:1-11. In this passage, Jesus and his mother are attending a wedding in Canna at which, the wine has run out. When Jesus’ mother informs him of the situation, Jesus seems to take little interest in the problem. Mary, however, appears to have a mother’s intuition in that her son will do something of great significance and thus tells the servants to “do whatever he tells you.” While he doesn’t quite believe in the timing, his mother does what any loving mother would do. Mary sees the best in him. She believes in him, gives him space, and steps back to allow her son to decide. Jesus then turns the water into wine, his disciples begin to believe, and with that, Jesus’s ministry of performing miracles is officially underway. It is in this moment, that we experience his supreme divinity along with his flawless humanity, together, in one nature. We are forever indebted to the Father for giving us his perfect Son. When you #livemysunday this week, remember to give thanks for the miracle that is our Savior, Jesus Christ.
