This week’s Gospel reading for the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, also known as the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany for some, comes from Luke 4:21-20 and picks up where last week’s scripture ended. Remember, Jesus was in his hometown synagogue announcing a prophecy had been fulfilled. Eager for Jesus to “prove it”, the crowd ultimately turns their back on Jesus when he refuses to show favor to his hometown people. Jesus points out that what he will do instead, is be a prophet who serves those living on the fringes of society and he does this through referencing the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Elisha. These were two men that fed the hungry and took care of the sick; they served the people of God. In a similar way, Jesus came to serve his people, but he also came to set them free. If we think about his life of service, how can we relate that servitude to ourselves? Are we present to those in our life who need our help? Do we show up when the call arises? You can #livemysunday when you show care and concern for the same people and situations Jesus would have.
