Sunday 3/20/2022

As we enter the Third Sunday of Lent, the church gives us the Gospel reading from Luke 13:1-9. Two different stories take place, but they are intertwined. It begins by Jesus commenting on the sudden death of two different groups of people and he tackles the thinking of the time that “good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people” which was a customary way of thought for the Jewish people. Jesus turns that theory on its head. In reference to those that died he says, “Do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means!” It simply is not this way. Accidents happen and when they do God’s mercy cannot be questioned. Then Jesus choses to share a parable; it is one where the owner of a fig tree that hasn’t produced fruit in three years, sees it as a nuisance and a waste of materials and he wants it gone. The gardener begs for another year of cultivating, and we can see ourselves in the wayward fig tree. There may be times when we feel like we aren’t particularly worthy of such attention and love, times when we haven’t been doing much of anything. In this Lenten season, we glean from this reading that now is the time to work on ourselves, to take better self-care of our mind and body in our prayer, almsgiving, and fasting. We can #livemysunday when we cultivate our own walk with Jesus and know that we are not neglecting our discipleship with him.
