Today is the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, or the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost, and the Gospel reading comes from Luke 10:25-37. This reading is commonly known as “The Good Samaritan” story. In it, Jesus takes the time to further answer the question of a scholar who is challenging him about who exactly is a neighbor? When reading this scripture passage, it is apparent that many folks will pass by and ignore the very person in need. And why is that? Do they not view the man left for dead as their responsibility? Or is it because it’s just easier to step aside and let someone else do the work? Are we too busy to lend a helping hand when we clearly see a person or family in need of assistance? Or perhaps it seems too messy to get involved and think that “it’s not our place.” These are all common responses to these types of situations, but we can look to the Good Samaritan story and discover where Jesus reveals to us the model we should strive for. Each one of us is capable of getting our hands messy and doing the real work to help out others. Where have you side-stepped an opportunity to help others? This week will you #livemysunday and take advantage of the chance to help someone in need and live out the way Jesus wants us to? Will you help a neighbor?
