The church celebrates the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost) with the Gospel reading from Luke 10:38-42. Jesus visits the home of sisters, Martha and Mary. Martha immediately gets to work in the traditional sense and begins doing the household work of serving their guest while her sister takes a different route and sits at the feet of Jesus. Martha is annoyed and frustrated that the work should be left to her and her alone. When she pleads with Jesus to make her sister join her, he has a surprise for her. Mary is serving her guest but in a completely nontraditional way. She is offering her ears and her heart and taking the role of student. She is willing to come to the feet of Jesus and take in his word and it is exactly what Jesus advises Martha should do as well to steady herself. How many times in our own life have we been worried or anxious and could have turned to the Lord to listen to Him? We know He has the answers if we look to Him in our times of angst. Making a little room in our lives to encounter His word softens our hearts and puts us on the path to #livemysunday because we put Him first before all the other things that come our way. If you are feeling overwhelmed and tired by the mundane day-to-day, sit at the feet of Jesus and there you shall find comfort and peace.
